Two days in Whistler built around the Olympic Plaza, three museums, the Sliding Centre, a Nordic spa and dinner both nights, with nothing that depends on a lift or trail season.

Two nights in Whistler fill up with museums, Olympic history, a silent Nordic spa and long dinners, none of it tied to a lift ticket or a trail season. Day 1 stays on foot in the Village and Upper Village; Day 2 reaches out to Creekside, the Olympic sliding track on Blackcomb and the forest around Lost Lake. It suits a drive up from Vancouver at any time of year.

Day 1: The Village, Olympic history and Indigenous art

Start on Main Street at Purebread Bakery + Coffee. The bakery grew out of a stall at the Whistler Farmers' Market, and it makes its breads, cakes and pastries without preservatives or artificial additives. Its first storefront opened in Function Junction, and this Village shop followed.

Walk a few doors along to the Whistler Museum, behind the public library on Main Street. Florence Petersen started it in 1986, and it covers the summer lodge operators, the creation of Whistler Blackcomb and the 2010 Winter Games. Entry is by donation.

For lunch, Hunter Gather is a counter-order eatery and taphouse on Main Street, working with local producers and welcoming walk-ins of any group size.

Then step across to Whistler Olympic Plaza, a legacy of the 2010 Winter Games. The Olympic rings and Paralympic Agitos stand here, along with the original Olympic cauldron and eight aluminum panels naming every athlete who competed. In winter the plaza turns into an outdoor skating rink.

Next, the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre on Blackcomb Way, on the shared territory of the Squamish and Lil'wat Nations. Cultural Ambassadors lead hourly tours with songs and stories through the Great Hall, where carved house posts, story poles, canoes and regalia stand. The Thunderbird Cafe serves Indigenous-inspired food, including bannock. Tickets sell online.

Along Blackcomb Way, the Audain Art Museum opened in 2016 in a 56,000-square-foot building by Patkau Architects. Its collection runs from Emily Carr paintings and Indigenous masks to James Hart's The Dance Screen. Tickets sell online.

Dinner is at Alta Bistro on Main Street, which has cooked modern seasonal alpine food from local suppliers since 2010. Reserve a table ahead.

Day 2: Creekside, the sliding track and the spa

Drive south to Creekside for breakfast at BReD - Organic Sourdough on Lake Placid Road. Everything here is 100% plant-based and made from scratch: slow-fermented country sourdough, pastries and Elysian coffee. The bread sells fast, so the bakery suggests ordering ahead.

Head north to Whistler Sliding Centre on Glacier Lane, the only bobsleigh, skeleton and luge track in Canada and a 2010 Olympic venue. Free sightseeing covers a self-guided interpretive tour of the 1,450-metre track and its 16 curves; pick up a map outside Guest Services.

From there, Lost Lake Park is the place to stretch your legs. It joins the paved Valley Trail, with walking and biking trails, swimming in the lake, a disc golf course and an off-leash dog beach. From December 15 to March 31 the trails become more than 25 kilometres of cross-country skiing.

Back in the Village, lunch at Pasta Lupino on Main Street: freshly made pastas, sauces and bread, with Italian groceries from the deli counter. You choose the pasta (radiatore, linguine or spaghettini) and the sauce (tomato and basil, alfredo, bolognese or arrabbiata). It does not take reservations, so go as you are.

Spend the afternoon at Scandinave Spa Whistler on Mons Road, a Nordic spa in old-growth rainforest minutes from the Village. Silence is the golden rule everywhere on site, and a typical visit runs 3 to 5 hours of hot pools, cold water and rest. Book online.

Finish with dinner at Lorette Brasserie in the Village, a French brasserie from the team behind Caramba and Quattro. The menu runs to steak frites, beef cheek bourguignon and pan seared scallops, and tables can be reserved online.

Good to know

  • Winter tires or chains are required on the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99) from October 1 to March 31, so check your tires before you leave Vancouver.
  • A free shuttle runs from the Village to Lost Lake Park in summer, and the Valley Trail links the two by bike or on foot.
  • Scandinave Spa takes bookings online. See what's on this weekend before you settle the evenings.
